BEFORE and SEPARATE to the World Chess Championship match between Gukesh D and Javokhir S (https://stacker.news/items/1608324), there's a new Norway-Chess sponsored (and Magnus-blessed) tournament with some of the best players in the world participating.
24 players descend on Budapest, Hungary, to fight it out in a combined classical-rapid-blitz tournament, with the characteristic Norway Chess/football scoring -- designed to incentivize more aggressive play and going for the win (instead of taking boring, safe draws).
The structure and format is available at the Total Chess website:
3 rounds of blitz (3+2) for setting up the groups;
group stage with fast classical (45+30);
knockout stage one-on-one games combining four blitz (3+2), 2 rapids (15+10), and one fast classic (45+30), with progressively higher points accordingly (1, 4, and 8 points for wins; half that for draws).
The market resolves to the winner of the entire thing, the Grand Final, as announced by the Total Chess association
